Oklahoma Republican is a Dumbshit, Film at Eleven

March 17th, 2008

Oklahoma Republican State Representative Sally Kern finds herself the subject of some controversy after a Youtube clip surfaced in which she compared the “homosexual agenda” unfavorably with terrorism. I’m well aware that the whole “gay people want to turn our children into showtune-humming queers” line plays really well with a certain portion of the Republican base, and I’m prepared to live with that in the same way that I can live with the “evolution is an atheist conspiracy” bullshit. Could we possibly avoid the kind of scare-mongering where we compare the rise of Queer Eye with the new Muslim fanatic trend of sawing the heads off of infidels on videotape? It would really be a big help, and you can’t imagine how much the rest of us would appreciate not having to hear this kind of thing thrown in our face during a conversation about the virtues of free-market capitalism. Trust me, when a liberal starts losing an argument, this kind of shit is the final salvo. It’s getting really old.

Let me be clear on a few things, lest my position on these issues be misconstrued. I am opposed to gay marriage. I don’t have a dog in the fight in terms of the religious argument, I simply don’t think that gay marriage offers the same societal benefit that heterosexual marriage does. The idea that it’s some kind of constitutional right strikes me as complete bullshit. As far as I’m concerned, this one lies squarely in the “will of the people category,” and the popular sentiment on this issue is strongly in opposition.

No one should be assaulted, harassed, or maltreated for their sexual preference. Anyone who commits one of these offenses against another person for reasons of sexuality is a scumbag and should be treated accordingly. This kind of thing happens unfortunately, and it should not only be dealt with harshly by the appropriate legal authority, but anyone committing such acts should be ostracized by decent people.

That being said, we do not need a “gay and lesbian perspective” paraded out on every issue. You’re four fucking percent of the population. I don’t need to know the gay perspective on terrorism, economic cycles, food shortages, the environment, or automobile safety. I don’t need to know about your sexual proclivities any more than I do the proclivities of heterosexuals. It’s not my business and I have no desire for details. While we’re on the subject, I don’t want to see two men making out on a movie screen. It is different than watching a man and a woman, and no amount of inserting it into movies and television is going to make it a more comfortable experience. Feel free to make those types of movies, just don’t expect me to watch them.

Beyond that, I really could care less about who someone chooses to be involved with, so long as both are consenting adults. I can’t help but think that this type of thing would be much less of an issue if we stopped insisting on sharing the intimate details of our private lives with the general public.
